description of hike:
The scenery coupled with the satisfaction of reaching the final goal, makes this the ultimate hike. It is however, a very long and very difficult hike. The trail begins in Lukla at an elevation of around 2700m (8900ft). For those who have not hiked at high altitude previously, it is very important to observe the rule of not increasing altitude of more than 500m - 600m per day. Failure to observe this rule will result in altitude discomfort. In some cases it might cause altitude illness and in some cases Severe Altitude Sickness, which if not resolved rapidly, can be fatal. It is therefore, important to hike slowly with plenty of rest days. Plenty of water is essential, the higher the altitude the more you should be consuming. by the time you reach Gorak Shep you should be drinking at least 6 litres per day. The hike to Base Camp, from Lukla, should take 12 to 14 days. Continuing to Gokyo should only be considered if there have been no altitude issues. If you are hiking in a group or with guides or porters then you should hike at your own pace and avoid pushing yourself. Be very careful of Yaks - these cow like animals can be agressive if you confront them and it is especially important to keep to the uphill side of the trail, to avoid the danger of being pushed over the edge as they pass.
